Ganapati: Beyond the Obstacle Remover

You know the elephant head, the modaka and the mouse. Fewer people know the Purāṇas centred on Ganesha himself — the eight great manifestations of the Mudgala Purāṇa, a Gaṇeśa Gītā in which a king asks to see the cosmic form, or the traditions in which Ganesha does not only remove obstacles but governs them.

This season goes behind the image almost everyone recognises, and shows you where each story comes from. Where a text says something, we say which text. Where a telling is later tradition, we say so. Where the reading is ours, we label it.

The eight, at a glance

These are not "the only eight avatars of Ganesha". The tradition itself treats Ganesha's manifestations as endless and these eight as especially important — which is a different and more interesting claim.
